iPerú Tourist Information and Assistance is a free travel information service provided by PromPerú, the official tourist board of Peru.
PromPerú has taken great strides in the last few years, becoming a modern and effective promotional body, and the general standard of iPerú offices has also increased. Five or so years ago, you’d be lucky to find an actual person in an iPerú office or booth, let alone a simple map of the surrounding city.
Today, however, iPerú is, in general, a valuable service for tourists seeking information or assistance while in Peru. iPerú staff offer two types of assistance:
- Official tourist information — including information about tourist attractions, routes, destinations, local tour agencies, public transport and (sometimes) accommodation. Offices should also have a few maps and brochures, but you won’t always find what you’re looking for. You can also ask about paperwork issues, such as getting a replacement Tarjeta Andina de Migración.
- Tourism-orientated complaints — if you want to complain about any travel-related service (hotels, tour agencies, bus companies etc), iPerú staff can offer advice and support, sometimes acting as a mediator between you and the service. Don’t expect great results, but at least you’ll have someone on your side.
iPerú Offices in Peru
As of November 2013, iPerú has service points in the following 15 regions of Peru:
- Amazonas (Chachapoyas)
- Ancash (Huaraz)
- Ica (Nazca)
- La Libertad (Trujillo)
- Lambayeque (Chiclayo)
- Loreto (Iquitos)
You can find a more detailed list of all iPerú locations at the PromPerú website.
Some cities, such as Cusco and Lima, have multiple service points. Notable cities lacking an iPerú presence include a number of jungle locations such as Pucallpa, Tingo Maria and Tarapoto.
