Peru has one of the most dramatic elevation changes in South America. A trip can take you from the Pacific coast near sea level to cities above 3,000 meters and mountain passes above 4,000 meters in only a few days.
For travelers, the important numbers are not just geographical. Elevation affects how you feel, how quickly you should travel between destinations and how much time you may need to acclimatize before visiting places such as Cusco, Puno, the Inca Trail or Rainbow Mountain.

These figures should be treated as approximate travel-planning elevations. Elevation can vary within a city, archaeological site or wider region depending on the exact location being measured.

This means destinations such as Cusco, Huaraz and especially Puno deserve some advance planning.
Among major tourist destinations, Puno and Lake Titicaca are particularly high at around 3,810 meters.
Cusco is lower, but at approximately 3,399 meters it is still high enough for newly arrived travelers to feel the effects of thinner air.
Huaraz is approximately 3,052 meters and is the main gateway for much higher trekking routes in the Cordillera Blanca.
The Sacred Valley is generally lower than Cusco. Urubamba sits around 2,871 meters and Ollantaytambo around 2,792 meters, making the valley a useful lower-elevation stop for many Cusco itineraries.
Machu Picchu itself is lower again, at approximately 2,430 meters.

Common mild symptoms can include headache, tiredness, dizziness, nausea and reduced appetite.
Physical fitness does not guarantee protection from altitude sickness. Someone who exercises regularly at sea level can still develop symptoms after arriving quickly at high altitude.
The safest approach is to give your body time to adjust.
If symptoms become worse rather than improving, do not continue ascending simply to stay on schedule.

Current high-altitude travel guidance recommends allowing time at moderate elevation before moving higher rather than going directly from low elevation to a high sleeping altitude whenever your itinerary allows it.
During your first days at altitude:
Coca tea and coca leaves are traditionally used throughout the Andes and are commonly offered to travelers. However, they should not be treated as a substitute for gradual acclimatization, rest or medical attention when symptoms are serious.
Flying from Lima to Cusco is the quickest option, but it also creates a rapid elevation change from near sea level to approximately 3,399 meters.
Travelers with more time can break up the journey through lower and intermediate-elevation destinations.
A common south-Peru route follows Lima → Paracas → Huacachina → Arequipa before continuing higher into the Andes.
Arequipa sits at approximately 2,335 meters, making it a more gradual first major elevation step than flying directly from Lima to Cusco.
Peru Hop follows the southern Peru route through destinations such as Paracas, Huacachina and Arequipa before travelers continue toward Cusco, with flexible stops and hotel or hostel pickups.
The gradual route can give your body more time at changing elevations, but traveling overland does not guarantee that altitude sickness will be avoided. You should still monitor how you feel and allow recovery time when needed.
