Baggage Allowances for Airlines in Peru

Baggage allowances in Peru are fairly generous: Peru’s major domestic airlines all accept at least 23 kg of checked baggage and at least one item of hand luggage, with excess baggage fees that aren’t too severe. However, this looks set to change with the entry of a new low cost carrier Viva Air Peru (a new airline owned by the backers of Viva Colombia and Ryanair) into the Peruvian market.

The information below is for flights within Peru only, unless otherwise stated. Standard security restrictions apply for flights within Peru; restricted items include knives, razorblades, box cutters, foldable or retractable knives, icepicks, scissors, sharp items etc. If you’re unsure about certain items, such as liquids, gels, and aerosols, check the airline’s policy page (or send them an email if you can’t find the relevant information).

Star Peru Baggage Allowance

  • Hand luggage — Passengers can carry one piece of hand luggage, provided that it does not exceed 4 kg in weight and is no more than 40 cm x 35 cm x 20 cm (height-width-depth). Hand luggage must fit in the overhead compartment of the cabin or under the seat in front of you.
  • Checked baggage — The baggage allowance for each passenger is 25 kg, distributed between a maximum of two items of luggage for each passenger. Baggage items must not exceed the following dimensions: 75 cm high, 45 cm long, 35 cm wide, or 155 linear centimeters.
  • Excess baggage — Anything beyond the maximum baggage allowance is considered excess baggage. It can be checked at an additional rate of USD$1.77 for each additional kilo.

Peruvian Airlines Baggage Allowance

  • Hand luggage — Passengers can carry 8 kg of hand luggage on all flights in Peru, with the exception of flights leaving Cusco, in which case the allowance is 5 kg (presumably due to runway size limitations?). Hand luggage must not exceed the following dimensions: 40 cm x 32 cm x 20 cm.
  • Checked baggage — Two pieces of baggage weighing up to 25 kg in total (with no single bag weighing more than 32 kg).
  • Excess baggage — US$1.50 plus sales tax for each additional kilo.

LATAM Baggage Allowance (formerly LAN Peru)

  • Hand luggage — The maximum weight for carry-on baggage is 8 kg in economy and 16 kg in Premium Economy or Premium Business. The maximum dimensions are 55 cm x 35 cm x 25 cm, including the pockets, wheels and handle.
  • Checked baggage — Within Peru the limit is one 23 kg piece of baggage (for international flights inside South America, you are allowed two bags weighing 23 kg in total) with maximum linear dimension of 158 cm (length + height + width).
  • Excess baggage — My brain couldn’t handle the excess baggage instructions for LATAM, so take a look at the link below and see what you make of it. It looks like US$12 per additional kilo, but then there seem to be some fee ranges for routes that permit one bag of 23 kg (which includes Peru).

Avianca Baggage Allowance (formerly TACA)

  • Hand luggage — One carry-on baggage with a maximum weight of 10 kg, with exterior dimensions that do not exceed 115 cm (length + height + width). You may also take an additional item, such as a coat, hat, portfolio, purse, photo or video camera, or laptop in carry case.
  • Checked baggage — In economy, one piece with a maximum weight of 23 kg; in business class, two pieces with a maximum weight of 32 kg.
  • Excess baggage — US$2.50 for each additional kilo, up to 45 kg. Oversize items (larger than 158 cm and less than 230 cm) are charged at $50 per piece.

LC Peru Baggage Allowance

LC Peru baggage allowances vary slightly depending on the type of plane (Dash or Boeing).

  • Hand luggage — One piece weighing either 5 kg (Dash) or 9 kg (Boeing), with maximum dimensions of 40 cm x 30 cm x 20 cm. You can also take one smaller personal item such as a purse, laptop or diaper bag.
  • Checked baggage — Checked baggage must not exceed 15 kg (Dash) or 23 kg (Boeing).
  • Excess baggage — US$1.50 plus sales tax for each additional kilo.

Airline Baggage Tips for Peru

  • All of the airlines mentioned above accept pets (cats and dogs only) for an additional charge. Always check the individual airlines policies, however, as there are a number of regulations to keep in mind.
  • Most if not all of the airlines above accept sports equipment as checked luggage, sometimes with separate weight or size regulations. Check each airline policy for more info. As an example, both LATAM and Star Peru accept the following items (often as free checked baggage depending on weight and size): surfboards, golf clubs, bicycles, skateboards, SCUBA equipment and fishing rods. They will only accept these items if they are securely packaged.
